Hi, I'm Xiwen Zhang, a PhD candidate in Geography, originally from Yunnan, China. My research interests broadly span political ecology, water governance, agroecology and food sovereignty, settler colonialism and Indigenous land rights, and environmental justice. I'm especially interested in how relationships between people, water, and land are shaped by colonial histories and power, approached through feminist political ecology and community-based participatory research. Currently, my dissertation examines how traditional Hawaiian water stewardship and kalo (taro) cultivation in the Wailua watershed on Kauaʻi can serve as decolonial practices that strengthen food sovereignty and environmental sustainability. I'm also exploring how small-scale farms and communities are leading post-disaster agricultural restoration.
